The “Shakspeare” book and the urn are both incredible discoveries. First, there’s the “Shakspeare” tome. That isn’t a mistake. William Shakespeare’s last name has been misspelled a million different ways since he died, and today’s spelling was only formalized in the 20th century. This form, called Shakspeare, was fashionable in the late 18th century.
As far as the 18th century is concerned, the pièce de résistance is this ballot ticket from Michigan, which dates from the Civil War. Abe Lincoln and Andrew Johnson take center stage, but if you look closely, you’ll discover that the roles become increasingly esoteric until coroners are at the bottom.
