Why Queen Elizabeth II was buried in a lead-lined coffin

If you tuned into the broadcasts of the Queen’s funeral, you might have been wondering why her coffin was lined with lead. Maybe your grandaunt told you it was to stop an ancient king from coming back to life–which couldn’t be further from the truth. All British royals are buried in coffins fitted with lead linings, although this practice isn’t exclusive to royalty.

Lining coffins with lead is an ancient practice that began as a means of preserving royal bodies. Long before the modern era of chemicals, this was one of the primary methods used to embalm corpses. It’s safe to say that such a tradition is representative of the British monarchy sticking to its historical roots.
