A rock believed to ‘house’ a demon from the outer world divided in two
The Sessho-Seki stone, a volcanic rock that has been slowly disintegrating, has become quite the tourist destination in Japan. According to Japanese legend, the stone is believed to contain a demon that used to possess a woman. The story goes that after the demon finally escaped into the rock, it then proceeded to kill anyone who touched it– until it was ultimately laid to rest.
Now that the rock has Split into two parts, it’s become an even greater tourist attraction. Everyone wants to see what a demon’s home looks like. Even though the most likely cause of the rock splitting is erosion, there have been superstitions flying around about how the demon got tired of being stuck.
