Mental Sanity
For some, spending weeks or even months without any communication with the outside world is unbearable. Although sailors go through a strict selection process and training before they are allowed to serve on a submarine, in very rare cases, some cannot handle the pressure.
If this situation arises, the submarine’s medical officer is given permission to order medications (largely sedatives) and confine the sailor. By confine, we are meaning that they would be monitored in their living quarters.
