Habitability Modifications
After expressing interest in joining the navy, many women were discouraged to find that submarines were designed with only male sailors in mind. Consequently, the navy had to accommodate for its female members by making some serious changes to its submarine structures.
These changes included the installation of separate facilities for women. Although these changes were modest in scope, and primarily done to the Ohio-class submarines. The Navy’s future submarines, including those that are currently under construction, like the USS Jersey, and the Colombia-class submarines will be “gender-neutral” so anyone can use them.
