A Love Like The Movies
We learn about relationships and how they work from our parents and other adults in our life who model their interactions and expectations. We also pick up a good chunk of our ideas on love from the media that gives us tear-jerking romances that have us longing for that rom-com, Cinderella love. But is it healthy?
What we see on the screen isn’t real life, and psychologists like Dr. Marianna Strongin say that it can have a “detrimental effect” on how we approach relationships with unnecessarily high expectations. Couples fight, and nobody is perfect. Maintaining and enforcing healthy boundaries and having open, productive communication goes further than expecting our partners to dramatically sacrifice themselves.
