Fear Of The Forbidden Number
The number 13 has a lousy rap, primarily in western cultures. Their fear of the forbidden number runs so deep they often skip it when numbering floors in public buildings, hospital rooms, and airport gates. So many people are afraid of the bad luck they believe 13 brings, it became an officially recognized phobia in 1910 called triskaidekaphobia. If you fear Friday the 13th, you’ve got the mouthful friggatriskaidekaphobia.
While the number 13 triggers a case of the sweats in some, other places in the world, like India and China, consider the double-digit a sign of good luck that ensures a long life, growth, and vibrancy. Pop star Taylor Swift also calls 13 her lucky number, inking it on her hand before every show. Maybe it’s our minds that decide what’s “good” and “bad.”
