Outdoor Spring Activities for Kids

March 2, 2021 by Molly Reynolds

With spring arriving in just shy of one month, it’s time to think about outdoor spring activities for kids. There are many ways to get outside and enjoy the warm weather that spring brings. After a long, dreadful winter it’s no wonder more parents are searching for outdoor spring activities for kids.

This list of ideas will inspire you to make a plan to get outdoors as soon as that sun starts to shine and the weather starts to get warmer. We hope you’ll use these ideas to engage in some quality parenting and child bonding time with your kids this spring.

Jump in Puddles

You’re never too old for some old-fashioned puddle jumping fun! Get in touch with your inner child and dress up in that rain attire to go jump in puddles with your kids. This idea will only work for kids that are truly interested in the mess that comes with puddling jumping, so if your kid tends to shy away from that type of activity move on to find another outdoor spring activity below.

Catch the Wind

You can catch the wind of springtime in so many different ways. Make a windsock with your kids and head outside to catch the wind. Buy a kite or pinwheel at your local outdoor store to enjoy the warm spring weather on a windy day. Your kids will love watching the kite, windsock, or pinwheel catch the wind and move as the wind blasts past each item.

Go on a Walk

During the spring season, everything starts to open back up. This includes hiking trails, nature trails, and bicycle paths. Take a look at your local community trails to see which ones are open and hit the trails with your kids. You can ride bikes together, walk a nature trail, or just enjoy a walk around town with your kids for some fresh air and exercise once spring arrives.

Start a Garden

As long as your region is safe from frost you can start a garden. Just check your weather stations to learn whether it’s safe to start a garden outside yet. If it’s too early to start a garden outside, you can plant seeds indoors to give your veggies a fresh start this year. Planting a garden will provide your family with creative bonding fun throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons.

Watch Wildlife

Make a bird feeder to play outside in your yard. Have fun watching as birds, squirrels and other wildlife come to feast on this food supply. The wildlife will be happy to see that you’re helping them find some food during this crazy time of year when the world is still somewhat cold, making it hard to find food out in the wild. Plus, your kids will love seeing the silly antics of wildlife!

There are so many clever ways to get outdoors and enjoy the spring season with your kids, but these ideas will help you move forward in planning a fun-filled spring season with kids. Use our ideas to craft up your spring homeschool curriculum, and family time events.
