#13: Bodega Drama
Certain neighborhoods in New York City have experienced massive change in the last few years. The rising cost of living and the cut-throat real estate market in the city have pushed certain people out of old neighborhoods and brought new, richer people in. With the change in demographics comes new tensions that can create some awkward conversations.
This person, described as a “gentrifier,” made an assumption that the local bodega owner in the neighborhood was from Morocco. Their attempt at friendly conversation backfired majorly, because they misunderstood the bodega owner when he said he was from Yemen, not Morocco. The bodega owner probably wasn’t too impressed by this gentrifier’s effort at conversation, considering that he’s probably owned his store for decades and a bunch of well-meaning but annoying newcomers are moving in!
