Can Pilots Leave the Cockpit While on Autopilot?
The term “autopilot” gives the impression of a plane flying without the need for piloting. This is somewhat true, but in most situations, little control is required. However, aviation regulations do not allow for taking risks.

The cockpit should never be left empty or unmanned. As a result, pilots are unable to leave the cockpit even if the autopilot is turned on. Pilots will have to alternate doing particular tasks; one pilot will need to use the toilet while the other leaves the cockpit.
