Face It; This Is Unsettling
Imaginary friends come in all shapes, sizes, and species. When I was four, I was afraid of burglars. My stepmom told me to wait while she talked to my brother. She returned with her hands cupped full of air and introduced me to my new protector, Raymond the Dragon. Raymond lived on my left shoulder every day until I forgot about him.
Raymond was a mythical creature with the name of a middle-aged man, but at least he had a face and was still imagined as living. We don’t know what’s more unsettling here: the fact that this girl’s imaginary friend isn’t alive or her belief that you lose your face when you lose your life.
