People Shared the Things They Love Most About the USA and the Answers Caught Us by Surprise

June 30, 2010 by Alison Campbell

With the Fourth of July coming up, we’ve decided to celebrate with a list of things that people around the world like about the good ol’ USA. As an American who has traversed the globe, it’s nice to see what people from other countries think since it sometimes feels like we have a shady reputation. Even though I’ve lived here my whole life, there are a few things on this list I’ve never thought about and I don’t often stop to think about how good we have it here. Honestly, we sometimes forget all the great things about our own countries, as you’re soon to find out.

#1: Hiya, Neighbor!

While not everyone in America is nice, many of us genuinely enjoy helping people out and seeing a smile on a stranger’s face. That said, it’s mostly a southern thing, as my northern friends often tease me for striking up conversations with people I don’t know.

Seriously, I recently had to take a friend from Chicago to downtown Atlanta and remind her to keep her head up and assure her it was okay to wave at people on the street. She says that you don’t make eye contact with strangers in Chicago, but I’ve only ever lived in places where it’s the norm.
