Another Kind of Struggle
Casual viewers might watch the X-Men movies and think that they’re all about how mutants struggle to find acceptance in the world. While this is true, this isn’t the only thing the filmmakers wanted to portray. Their struggle for acceptance was supposed to symbolize the struggles of minority groups of people, and in particular, the LGBT community.
Now, is this a stretch? Are people just trying to find connections where there aren’t any? Not exactly. Bryan Singer, the director of three of the X-Men movies, is also a part of that community. The scenes of mutants “coming out” to their parents and receiving unloving feedback isn’t unlike the experiences of certain people who eventually come out.
