#17: Say Goodbye to Misconceptions

The much-used “goodbye” as we know it didn’t always exist. In 1573, Gabriel Harvey used “goodbye” in a letter that was the short form of “God be with ye.” Etymology is quite interesting, especially given how language has evolved over the centuries. We’re going to bring the long form back into the zeitgeist again.

See? The gal in the pic above is clearly saying, “God be with ye!” to the person in her Zoom call. Even though “goodbye” has only been around for 448 years, it feels like a natural way to end a visit with friends or a phone call with grandma, and we can’t really imagine our lives without it. Goodbye, grandma! See? It just feels natural.
