Babies Don’t Have Knees?!
Did you know that humans don’t develop kneecaps until after their fourth year of life? During that time, the patella (kneecap) is composed of soft cartilage. Then, the process of ossification morphs that cartilage into cold, hard bone. Just as babies have a soft spot on their heads called a fontanelle. Babies are weird and fascinating!
Babies are incredibly fragile, and the above factlet proves that. There are “spaces” within their bone structure wherein it’s incomplete, but that’s because the baby is growing inside an adult human woman. These spaces allow for proper molding during birth. That’s why you must handle babies with the utmost care because they’re still developing even outside the womb.
