There are a lot of cool facts about sharks. For instance, sharks can live for several hundred years. In fact, Greenland sharks can live 400 years or more, while the Bowhead shark can live 200 years or more. Back in 2019, a Greenland shark was estimated to be 512 years old. That means it’s been around since 1507! Talk about historic.
There’s no denying it – these animals have the longest life span of any vertebrate. Why? One theory is that sharks spend their lives several leagues under the sea where the water is 29 degrees Fahrenheit. Coldness brings about slow metabolism and slow growth. Since they have a slow metabolism, it keeps them alive longer. We want to be sharks when we grow up!
