This terrible advice will make you wonder if this person is a product of a divorced couple. It would be hard to believe that parents that teach their children to avoid emotional vulnerability in romantic relationships would still be together. Believing that showing emotion with your romantic partner is a weakness will lead to unsuccessful relationships. 

Perhaps their child had to learn that showing emotion is totally acceptable and is actually needed to openly communicate in a relationship the hard way. It may have even taken a couples therapist to set him straight. However, if his parents were divorced, maybe he knew not to listen to them.
