30. Beware the Four
Many cultures have superstitions, and South Korea is no different. The number 4 sounds like “death,” and so their escalators and buildings are represented by an “F” instead of a “4.” This is reminiscent of America’s dislike of the number 13, though we skip it and hop straight from twelve to fourteen.
Just like South Korea, China also tends to skip the number four. Japan and Taiwan are two other countries that consider it unlucky. In Japan, the number 9 is also considered off-putting, and so the price of $9.99 isn’t used there for anything. It would signify suffering upon the buyer. 666, however, is considered “soothing” and can be found over people’s doorways to bring good luck!
