39. Buddhist Art
This is the Daegagsa Buddhist Temple in Seoul, South Korea. It’s located near the Changdeokgung Palace and was founded by Yongseong Seunim in 1911. Seunim is well known for his activist work in modern Buddhism, bringing the practice into the 20th century and helping with the March 1st Movement.
In 1911, this temple was just a tiny hanok, a traditional Korean house, but in 1986 it was transformed into the three-story temple with belfries that you see today. You can travel by subway on three separate lines and exit at the Jongno 3(sam)-ga Station. It’s just a short walk away. While this photo doesn’t show it, it’s surrounded by modern-day businesses.
