Laika the Space Dog
This story is especially creepy and very sad. This incredibly adorable dog was called Laika, and she was the first dog to be sent to space by the Russian Space Program.
She was born in the cold streets of Moscow, and was selected by the members of the Sputnik 2 team to make dog history and be launched into space on November 3, 1057.

In the photo, you can see her first moments inside the space shuttle. Laika died on that day, in low Earth orbit. Thankfully, modern space missions carrying dogs are designed to be recovered, so there would be no more animal casualties in the name of space exploration. She was a very good girl.
