What’s in a Name?
If you think about it, the name “Super Bowl” is such a weird name. The football match has nothing to do with bowls but balls instead! Originally, the name “Super Bowl” was meant to be a placeholder until managers like Lamar Hunt found a better name for it – but that clearly never happened.
Instead, the name “Super Bowl” stuck, although not all of the managers liked it at first. The N.F.L. commissioner, Pete Rozelle, apparently disliked the word “super” and thought it was a bad word. Apparently, he claimed it “had no sophistication,” but that didn’t stop the name from sticking as the official title.
