Hollywood has an embarrassing track record of whitewashing movie characters by using actors who don’t come close to resembling the people they’re playing. For example, in 2015, Emma Stone was cast to play a Chinese-Hawaiian-Swedish woman. History textbooks in the west also have a bad habit of lightening up illustrations of historically darker skinned people.
These instances have caused rightful outrage online, but this person missed the mark by a thousand miles when they called out Rami Malek as a “white guy playing an Egyptian.” Although Malek grew up in California as a first-generation American, he is a full-blooded Egyptian, and Egyptian Arabic was his first language. What more did the commenter want?
