#29 Asking People to Vote
As 2020’s midterm elections approached in November, Meghan and Harry released a video in September urging their fellow citizens to cast their ballots. As Meghan put it, “when we vote, our voices are heard.” Seemed pretty uncontroversial, but the couple was immediately slammed with claims that they had broken a promise to the Queen to remain politically neutral. Is there anything non-neutral about a public service announcement encouraging people to go vote?
The Queen did the same thing during the Scottish referendum and the Welsh local elections, encouraging citizens to exercise their right to vote. When William criticized politicians for inaction on climate change, no one brought up that pesky rule.
