The Trouble With Towers
The Eiffel Tower is a sight to behold. Believe it or not, the landmark wasn’t always the beloved symbol of Paris that it is today. In fact, when it was first built for the 1889 World’s Fair, many Parisians absolutely hated it. They thought it was an eyesore and a monstrosity, and they even formed a group called the “Committee of Three Hundred” to try and stop its construction.
Whether you love it or hate it, you can’t deny that it’s one of the most popular tourist spots on the planet. Over seven million people make the journey to Paris every year to visit the tower, which has spawned 50 copycats around the world. Five of them are in the United States, and none of them are the original.
