Emojis have given our digital communication a colorful flare that was missing before Japanese artist Shigetaka Kurita invented them in the 1990s. The word “emoji” is a mishmash of the Japanese words for “picture” and “character.” Now that you know a little more about our favorite little symbols, can you guess what led to the confusion here?
The US often lists itself first in scenarios where you might select its name from a list, but emojis aren’t American to begin with, so the stars and stripes aren’t the center of attention on both iPhones and Androids, where you’ll notice the world flags are organized in alphabetical order, placing the United States towards the end of the list.
