Braniff Airlines flight attendants, 1960s
Braniff Airlines was a Texas-based airline company that operated between 1928 to 1982. During the sixties, the company hired Italian fashion designer Emilio Pucci to design the crew’s uniforms – from the mid-sixties to the mid-seventies, the designer was in charge of six lines of uniforms for the ground crew and flight crew. Of course, fashion conventions were quite different at the time, as the picture shows.

You’d be surprised to learn this uniform was part of a line called the “air strip” – since it involved flight attendants taking off layers of the uniform as the flight progressed. Pucci’s designs for the airline throughout the years were all colorful, matching the fashion and the spirit of the times, and similar color schemes were used to decorate gate lounges, ticket offices and aircraft interiors.
