All throughout World War II, food was rationed in the U.S., as well as in Europe, due to shortages. In England, sugar was rationed until 1953. Naturally, when the restrictions were finally over and sugar was available for any taker, people, and children in particular, couldn’t wait to get their fix.

The very first day the candy store was open for the public, stores couldn’t contain the masses of people rushing in. This photo was taken in England in 1953, and it represents the end of the dark, chocolate-less era. Children lined up to satisfy their sweet-tooth and this is what it looked like.
