A group of scientists in 1961
The Space Race is the background to this photo, taken in 1961. The two most powerful countries at the time – and the two biggest rivals – were having a race to achieve supremacy in spaceflight capabilities. The big question then was – who would send a man to space first? Scientists were working days and nights to achieve this historic goal.
Chalkboards still haven’t lost their charm in the science community, but once, before tablets and computers were around, they were all they had. These scientists, working on the Space Race mission, were chosen to pose for a cover story in Life magazine, in their natural work environment.
