The famous Oscars selfie, 2014
When a picture or a post on social media gets a lot of attention, they say it “broke the internet.” This photo, however, literally broke the internet. After this photo was posted on Twitter, the application broke down for a couple of minutes due to the load of likes and comments that was too heavy for the system.
This was taken at the 2014 Academy Awards ceremony, which was hosted by Ellen DeGeneres. She wanted to tweet a selfie during the broadcast, and so she went on stage and approached Meryl Streep for the photo. Suddenly the two were surrounded by a group of actors who wanted to join in on the fun, and Bradley Cooper took charge of the cellphone. It became known as “Ellen’s Selfie” and broke Twitter’s retweet record with over 3 million retweets.
