V-J Day, 1945
This is probably one of the most iconic photos in American history, but not many people know its origins. When World War II ended in 1945, festivities and celebrations were held all across the country. Photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt documented the festivities on the crowded streets of New York City.
The photo you see wasn’t a romantic moment between two love birds, as you might have thought. A young sailor was so enthusiastic, he was kissing random women on the street. Eisenstaedt was quick enough to snap this shot when the sailor grabbed a nurse and kissed her passionately, and this photo became an immediate sensation.
