The Stories Behind These Iconic Photos

October 7, 2010 by Adriana Matthews

A TV screen in a shop window, 1948

Today, televisions can be found in every household around the country, but that wasn’t the case until the 1960s. Even when the TV was first invented in the late 1920s, it was quite different than the one we know today – a small, round box showing moving pictures in black and white, but back then, they didn’t know any better.

It was only around 1950 that televisions started to be available for commercial use, as more and more American families purchased one of those magic boxes, but even then, many families couldn’t afford them. This photo was taken in 1948, when a young boy spotted a TV screen through a shop window and it captured his attention. The photographer managed to capture the boy’s mesmerized gaze.
