More Than a Butt-Load
Butt-load sounds like a made-up word to describe a large amount of something, but it turns out, as Twitter user Rebecca Munson reveals, that butt-load is a real measurement unit. It might sound like a vulgar word people throw around, but the word ‘butt’ comes from the Medieval French word for ‘bottle’.
Butt-load, then, used to be a proper measurement unit for beverages during the Medieval age in England. It’s amazing that the word is still in use, although today people throw it around whenever they’re referring to a large amount, rather than the exact measurement it represents.
