We grow up watching movies about star-crossed soulmates and going to weddings where couples gush about how happy they are to spend their lives with “the one.” Although it’s the norm, open relationships and polyamory are becoming more popular, as a poll of 23,000 found that 25% of Americans are curious about coupling up outside their primary relationship, while around 5% are actively engaged in open relationships.
How did monogamy become the standard? Social scientists theorize the shift from polyamory to monogamy could have been a way to slow the spread of STDs as communities grew larger. They also suspect it was a protective measure to prevent outside men from hurting children to get to their mothers for a mating session. Now that we’re past clubbing kids to get some action, people are exploring their options again.
