These days we have the infamous “5-Minute Crafts” where you can pick up some useful and other not-so-useful life hacks. Back in the day, you could find similar hacks in magazines. This particular tip recommends burning flashlight batteries in the fireplace since the burning zinc will prevent soot formation and the chemicals will make colorful flames. 

If you’re thinking “Wait, wouldn’t throwing a battery into fire cause an explosion?” you’re absolutely right. However, back then zinc batteries were not sealed and wouldn’t build up pressure or explode when exposed to the extreme heat of a fire. But yeah, this isn’t something you should try anytime soon.
