This Is Why We Prefer Texting
The concept of text messaging was born all the way back in the mid-80s, with the first send button being hit in 1992. Around 1999 we started training our thumbs to type in T9, but we were still calling more than texting. Now our thumbs fly across our smartphone screens so effortlessly that phone calls feel more like a hassle, and we assume our friends are calling by accident.
Phone calls now feel like an intensely personal experience we have mentally to prepare for. If your friend says something you know is meant to make you chuckle, you’ll have to let out a genuine laugh instead of typing “lol” with a deadpan expression on your face. There are also awkward pauses to contend with instead of pretending you haven’t read the text yet.
