In Loving Memory
This artwork, titled Christ of the Abyss, was built and installed by Duilioi Marcante in 1954. It sits 17 meters beneath the surface of the sea in Italy. The statue honors Marcante’s dear friend Dario Gonzatti, the first Italian to attempt deep-sea scuba diving. Gonzatti tragically died in a diving accident, which was what inspired Marcante to erect this incredible work of art in his honor.
The bronze figure of Jesus with open arms was completed in August of 1954 to commemorate Gonzatti’s death. The artist’s intention was to honor his dear friend while also reminding other divers of the hazards of the sea.
