An Underwater Silver Mine
Can you imagine what the hiring process must have been like in the Silver Islet? The small island off the shore of Ontario became home to the world’s most profitable silver mine. It was permanently shut in 1884 because the mine was submerged. Sadly for the new workers, they hadn’t received news of the mine shutting down until after they arrived.
When the bulk of the new hires saw where the mine was, most of them left, but those who stayed were in for a wild ride. Thanks to the Montreal Mining Company, the area had a lot of pure silver in 1868.
