An Environmental Disaster Waiting to Happen
Here’s something that’ll both shock and infuriate you. What you’re looking at isn’t an oversized buoy floating in the middle of the ocean somewhere. It’s actually a 17,000-ton oil rig, which had somehow dislodged from its position and started free-floating toward land.
Aboard the oil rig is roughly 300 tons of fuel. About 80 tons of the fuel found its way into the ocean, which means that the water in the area isn’t safe to swim in. The Coastguard and Marines took immediate action to test the waters, but even to this day, the levels of diesel fuel in the water haven’t waned by much.
