Gollum The Gruesome
Gollum’s obsession with obtaining his “precious” golden ring began decades before Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings films brought J.R.R. Tolkien’s books to the big screen. There are a lot of adults out there who unfortunately remember the 1977 animated film The Hobbit. Peter Jackson’s CGI Gollum was grotesque, but his two-dimensional big brother was somehow remarkably worse.
CGI Gollum was pitiful and looked like the lovechild of a wet rat and an old man who refused to let go of that last scraggly patch of hair spared by male pattern baldness. On the other hand, the 2D animated version was more like an unidentifiable reptilian abomination with human ears and a demonic voice that probably emitted a curse through the TV screen.
