Masculine Heels
High heels today are viewed as the epitome of feminine beauty. But this only became the norm around the 19th century in Europe. Before then high heels were seen as masculine footwear. At first, they were used for keeping men’s feet in stirrups and later came to symbolize high social status and masculinity. They also made men seem even taller.
By the 19th century when women began wearing them, they came to be seen as frivolous and feminine, and their original meaning was forgotten. Now every woman has at least one pair in her closet that she wears to feel beautiful and feminine.
