Minnesota – Azayamankawin Or “Old Betsey”
Azayamankawin had a few nicknames. She was a Mdewakanton Dakota lady who had her portrait taken during her old age, and was otherwise called “Old Betsey” and “Old Bets”. Her name signifies “Berry Picker” She was huge in her nearby community, particularly all through the Dakota War.

Injured soldiers would regularly be sent to her from every side of the war, and she made a quick noticeable image as one of the most respected and looked for local healers. This picture of her, taken around 1865, shows the see she was held in as photography was over the top expensive at that point. Although her role during the war was enormous, her son, Taopi, was known to have not participated in the war.
