Arkansas – The Sultana Explosion
The oldest photo from Arkansas is a pretty sad and disturbing one. The explosion of the steamboat Sultana that took place in 1865, is marked among the most consequential and life-changing events in history.

The explosion took the lives of over 1800 people, which is more in number when compared to the Titanic tragedy. To date, the explosion is the worst maritime disaster in the history of the United States. The historic picture was shot on the 26th of April, a day before the boat was set to sail. The Union soldiers who had just been released from jail were onboard.
