Working Parents: How to Manage Time and Prioritize Self-Care

February 16, 2023 by Kristen Reed

As working parents, it can be challenging to balance the demands of our careers with those of our families. We strive to provide for our children while still finding time for ourselves. But often, amidst the chaos of daily life, we forget to prioritize self-care and end up feeling overwhelmed and stressed out.

It is important to remember that taking care of ourselves is essential for our overall wellbeing. Even small amounts of self-care can have a huge impact on our mental and emotional health. Taking even just 10 minutes each day to reflect, relax, or do something enjoyable can help us reduce stress and increase our productivity.

It can also be beneficial to plan time for yourself throughout the week rather than waiting until you have a free weekend. By carving out some time each day to focus on yourself, you’ll create space to unwind and recharge which will make it easier to handle all of your commitments with greater balance and ease.

Planning for blocks of “me” time throughout the week is a great way to stay on top of things without becoming too overwhelmed. This could include scheduling in a massage, a lunch with friends, or some quiet time alone reading a book. Taking part in activities that give you pleasure or calm your mind can have a profoundly positive effect on both your mental and physical health.

Another important aspect of managing time and prioritizing self-care is setting reasonable expectations for yourself and being mindful of how much you have going on at any given moment. Recognizing when enough is enough allows us to be kinder to ourselves, especially when we’re already feeling overworked and stressed out. Learning how to say no politely but firmly can also help prevent overloading ourselves with too many commitments.

Finally, keep in mind that it is ok if you don’t always get everything done that you set out to do — it’s not realistic (or healthy) to expect perfection from yourself all the time! It’s important to give yourself permission to take breaks when needed, delegate tasks whenever possible, and know your limits so that you don’t become completely drained by your responsibilities. It’s only by recognizing what we are capable of doing (and what we cannot do) that we will be able to properly manage our time and prioritize self-care without feeling guilty about it.

By taking small steps towards prioritizing our own wellbeing, we can create more space for joy and fulfillment in our lives. So give yourself permission to make time for you – it will be well worth it!
