Janis Joplin
The voice of the Flower Generation, singer-songwriter Janis Joplin’s musical career spanned only eight years but is still hugely influential decades later. Like many other members of her generation of rock stars, she succumbed to personal demons on October 4, 1970, a member of the ill-fated “27 club.” This photo was taken several weeks prior, on August 12, during a sold-out performance at Harvard Stadium. Joplin did what she does best, wowing the 40,000 spectators.
The photo series wasn’t discovered until 45 years after she passed away, even though it was taken at her last concert.
