How to be a More Consistent Parent

August 22, 2021 by Adriana Matthews

Dealing with kids can be challenging, especially when you have more than one. Raising children with conflicting personalities can be quite a task. Teaching them how to deal with each other and compromise can be tough. But being a consistent parent will make things less complicated for everyone involved.

Teach them to respect you

How do children learn? They observe and imitate. So if they see their parents respecting a person, then they will also treat that individual with the same level of respect. One way to make your child show respect is to teach him how to greet other people as well as family members when arriving or leaving the house.

Teach them how to greet people by shaking hands, putting out their right hand, and introducing themselves. Another way to teach them respect is to make them take off their caps or hats when they enter a room. You can also help your child show respect by calling each other’s attention if you see them doing something disrespectful such as making fun of someone, teasing, or arguing.

Teach them boundaries

No one likes having an overbearing parent who interferes with everything they do, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. A good parent will know how to draw clear boundaries between their children and other people they interact with on a daily basis.

It’s a must that you teach your children ways to say no when someone asks them for things like money, or personal information they don’t want to share.

Teach them how not to be a bully

Parents usually take their kids’ behavior very seriously, even if it’s just at school. Teach your children how to avoid bullying other people by making them understand the consequences of their actions. Helping them to know that they should give respect and not expect respect from others will teach them how to deal with bullies in a better way.

Teach them to ask for help when they need it. Teach them not to keep problems all bottled up inside. It’s good to get things off your chest instead of keeping them buried deep inside, especially if something is bothering you or making you feel uneasy somewhere.

Be a role model

Children are always learning from the people around them. If you want to be a good role model, make sure that you’re the kind of person your kids would like to become.

Teach them how to treat others by being polite with everyone they meet on their way, no matter who it is. Encourage them not to judge a book by its cover by letting them interact freely with people who may look different from them.

Helping them understand how to accept people’s differences and embrace what makes them special will make you a good role model for them.

You’ll need to be consistent in all these areas in order to find success with your kids. Consistency is the keyword when raising kids. You must not only teach it but also live by example.
