When you are shopping for your first bike, you probably want to find something manageable, reliable and affordable. Maybe a used bike that you only need to pick up some motorcycle tires online to get into road-ready order. I took a different approach: I bought a vintage Honda. Below are some of the reasons why I made this decision.
It Needs To Be Right For You
Everyone has an opinion on what the right first bike is. Some people want a small, totally manageable bike. Others want something they can keep for a while. Of course, everyone has a different opinion on what looks good. In short, you are going to need to make up your own mind on what is right for you, which is exactly what I did.
I knew I didn’t want something that was too large, and I wanted something with an attractive, retro look. There are plenty of modern bikes with classic styling, but this thought was the first step towards my vintage bike.
Vintage Bikes Are Simpler
There is something to be said for getting your hands dirty wrenching on your first bike. Vintage bikes certainly tend to need a lot more work, especially if they haven’t had the most attentive owners in the past. Fortunately, older bikes also tend to have simpler construction. You may need to work on them, but it is easier to learn that on newer, more high-tech bikes.
They Make You Feel Connected
Motorcycle ownership is a way of life. History is particularly important to me, so feeling connected to the history of motorcycles means a lot for me. A vintage bike was a great way to achieve this feeling.
Was It Worth It?
There is no doubt that vintages bikes come with their own unique challenges. However, it was absolutely worth it. Honda is an especially good choice because of the availability of Honda motorcycle OEM parts, aftermarket mods and motorcycle tires online and in stores. If I could go back, I’d buy my vintage Honda all over again.
