Year-Round Family Traditions for Bonding

January 17, 2021 by Veronica Phillips

Many families have holiday traditions that come around once per year. While holiday traditions are an excellent way to celebrate the holiday season, family traditions don’t have to come around once per year.

Today we’re diving into the topic of family traditions that you can enjoy all year round. These examples will provide you with a chance to bond with your family as you make everlasting memories with your children.

What are some common family traditions?

Some of the most common family traditions include eating a meal together, family prayer, singing together, and a secret handshake. These simple family traditions don’t take much time out of the day yet provide a chance for everyone to feel united within the family unit.

Celebrate Half Birthdays

Get unique and start celebrating half birthdays for every family member. A half birthday is the sixth month in between your annual birthday. You can make cupcakes, fill balloons, and give a small gift to celebrate the halfway point of another birthday year.

Family Dinner

Select one day of the week that your family must be present for a meal. This is typically done like a dinner with family members that live in the home. Families who opt to go with this tradition for bonding will typically select Sunday as the evening everyone sits and enjoys a meal together.

Quirky Noises

Make up a noise that only your family members will respond to. This could be a silly squeak or squeal that only other family members know to reply to. This is similar to a secret family handshake but can be done when you’re further apart from each other at an event or in a store.

Special Meals

Only opt for Chinese food, Indian food, or another food theme during certain times of the year. For example, maybe your family only eats Chinese food once a year on Father’s Day or you enjoy another type of cuisine for a specific day like Columbus Day. Have some fun planning this with your family!

Candlelight Dinner

Once a month gather the family around for a candlelight dinner where you dress up in a suit and tie with the girls wearing a fancy outfit. This can help the family feel special and united all the while being in the comfort of your home to enjoy a fancy home-cooked meal together all dressed up.

Volunteer at a Shelter

Opt to make volunteering a part of your family traditions for bonding. Perhaps you enjoy animals and want to help the animals at a local shelter once per year, or you can volunteer at a food bank together. Make plans to volunteer each month or year for a charity that fits with your family’s values.

Celebrate Each Season

Lastly, another fun family tradition for bonding that you can enjoy together is a celebration of the change in seasons. Create a spectacular event that you only do when winter arrives, spring arrives, summer arrives, and autumn arrives.

These are just some of the most unique ways a family can start hosting family traditions all year round. It’s always nice to have a celebration, it can uplift your spirits and help strengthen the unity within your household when you opt to have a few year-round family traditions.
