When Lightning Strikes at the Beach
We’ve found out what happens when lightning strikes a golf course, as well as how crystal-like fulgurites are formed. And now we get to see what happens when lightning strikes sand on the beach–when lightning strikes the beautiful Dornoch Beach in Scotland, to be exact.
Just as fulgurites form in soil when lightning strikes, silica glass can form from sand when it’s struck by lightning. If the temperature is higher than 1800 degrees Celsius (3272 degrees Fahrenheit), the sand can fuse together to make glass. Just another amazing thing nature is capable of!
