Some People Are Still Confused
It’s safe to say Italian dance music group Eiffel 65 confused most of the world with their lyrics to “Blue (Da Ba Dee).” Almost everyone heard the nonsensical “da ba dee da ba di” as something completely different and often mildly violent, thanks to the harmonizer that obscured vocalist Jeffrey Jey’s voice.
In an episode of Vice’s The Story Of, the band reminisces over the creation of their biggest hit, saying they chose the “da ba dee” line because it was something they thought listeners could easily sing along to. More than 20 years later, we’re still singing along, even if it’s the wrong words.
