While on a business trip in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945, he witnessed the first atomic bomb detonation. Suffering from serious burns but alive, Yamaguchi managed to return to his hometown of Nagasaki, seeking refuge and recovery.

Astonishingly, as he recounted the unprecedented devastation to his skeptical boss on August 9, the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Yamaguchi survived this second blast as well, becoming a poignant symbol of resilience and the catastrophic power of nuclear weapons.
